The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) and the Metro Ilocos Norte Council (MINC) are addressing challenges related to traffic congestion and the need for improved public transportation systems through the construction of the Ilocos Norte Transport Hub. Located in Laoag City, the province’s capital, the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in central business areas and establish a socially interactive space that integrates commercial, governmental, and eco-friendly elements.

Seamless, convenient, and inclusive connectivity is one of the primary goals of the project. The future Central Transport Terminal will serve as a crucial node for inter- and intra-provincial routes of buses, jeepneys, taxis, and tricycles. It will connect the capital not only to surrounding cities and municipalities but also to other provinces.

According to the local government, the project is expected to benefit approximately 5,000 public transport groups, residents, and the overall community.

As a landmark development of the Provincial Government, the master plan and design will provide the following:

  • A vibrant and safe space for public or social interaction;
  • A secure and modern centralized terminal;
  • A mixed-use development integrating retail spaces, government offices, and parks, among others;
  • A renewable source of water and energy through green solutions; and
  • Pride and sense of place.

The design draws inspiration and incorporates elements from the Malacañang of the North, one of  Ilocos Norte’s esteemed heritage structures. The Transport Hub blends these elements with modern design and the application of advanced construction technologies, thereby modernizing Ilocano architecture. Key sustainable features include solar roofing, rainwater harvesting, natural lighting and ventilation, and vehicle charging stations. The project is realized through a collaborative effort among the Local Government of Ilocos Norte; stakeholders; and a cross-disciplinary team of architects, urban planners, designers, and engineers.
