Master Planning of San Vicente, Palawan as a Flagship Tourism Enterprise Zone has been nominated for prestigious planning industry award
The Master Planning of San Vicente, Palawan as a Flagship Tourism Enterprise Zone is a finalist in the category for International Award for Planning Excellence at the 2016 Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence.
San Vicente, in the northwestern side of the main island of Palawan, has attracted visitors and investors with its pristine beaches, marine life, rice fields and 82,000 hectares of forests. Palafox Associates was awarded by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority to create the masterplan for the flagship Tourism Enterprise Zone after going through a competitive bidding. The masterplan aims to strike the balance between providing for the common good and respecting property rights, and encouraging investments while preserving areas of natural beauty and cultural significance.
The 883-hectare area is bounded by the 14-kilometer beach and an average of 500 meters inland. It is the first coast in the Philippines to have a 50-meter setback from the high tide - the first 30 meters is a no-build zone and additional 20 meters of non-habitable, non-permanent structures.
The RTPI represents 23,000 planning professionals worldwide and promotes spatial planning, shapes policy and raises professional standards. The Awards for Planning Excellence have been run by the RTPI for over 30 years to recognise planning excellence.
Finalists have been recognised for their national contribution to planning and demonstrate how significant schemes can be delivered speedily through the planning and other consents systems.
Phil Williams, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute said:
“The finalists highlight outstanding examples of planning that have made a positive impact on the local community and environment. The judges will find it difficult separating the finalists and choosing winners given the high calibre of entries this year.”
Andrew Jones, Practice Leader Design Planning + Economics, AECOM said:
“AECOM is proud to be a headline sponsor of this year’s RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence. The finalists are a diverse mixture of outstanding examples of planning, which really demonstrate the impact the profession has on quality and delivery in the built environment.”
David Jackson, Head of Planning, Savills said:
“Savills is delighted to be a headline sponsor of the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence. The finalists this year reflect the positive impact planning has on our communities across the UK, Ireland and internationally through projects, plans and people.”
The Awards ceremony will be held at Milton Court at The Barbican, London on 5 May 2016.
The headline sponsors are AECOM and Savills. Tickets to the ceremony go on sale on 8 February. For more information visit the RTPI website.
